Oasis – A UK Great

Oasis was a UK-based rock band that peaked during the mid-1990s. Originally called The Rain in 1991 when it formed in Manchester, the group renamed to Oasis when Noel Gallagher joined and took control of brother Liam’s band. Shortly thereafter, the band began passing around its demos and gained the interest of various UK record labels.

The band’s rough, rebellious image drew influence from the British Invasion, and received inspiration from The Beatles. With favorable press coverage and spectacular singles like “Live Forever” and “Supersonic,” Oasis became an overnight success. When it released its first album Definitely Maybe in 1994, it debuted at number one in Britain and contained several songs which are considered to be the greatest songs of all time by fans in the UK.

Troubles mounted after this first wave of success, however, and tension would plague the band for the rest of its existence. In no time, the band started receiving negative press about its members’ misbehaviors. The public was in turns amused and annoyed by their drunken exploits, drug use, and last-minute cancellation of gigs. The Gallagher brothers fought constantly and openly attacked other British musicians in the media. In more than one occasion, rumors of a split had surfaced.

Despite these, the band pulled through to produce its second album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory, which also debuted number one in the UK. Following its success with “Wonderwall,” the band struggled on to produce Be Here Now and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, both relatively successful in their own right. The 2005 release of Don’t Believe the Truth showed a loosening of Noel’s reins on Oasis, as every band member contributed in terms of songwriting.

In all, Oasis released seven studio albums, all number ones in the UK. Unfortunately, the highly publicized rift between the Gallaghers soon came out of control, and 2009 finally saw Noel’s departure from the band. Thereafter, Noel has played various solo concerts whereas the rest of the band released their first album as Beady Eye, Different Gear, Still Speeding, in 2011.

Celine Dion Christmas Music

If you don’t know who Celine Dion is then you must be living under a rock, in a remote island, on another planet. She is best known for her nineties power ballads and I grew up listening to most of her songs. She won two academy awards for the category of Best Song with the Beauty and the Beast for the movie of the same name and My Heart Will Go On for the James Cameron megahit Titanic.

This Christmas season, we can delight ourselves with her beautiful renditions of traditional and classic Christmas songs as well as originals from her Christmas album entitled These Are Special Times released in 1998. It’s has sixteen holiday tracks that you would definitely want to be on your Christmas playlist.

Let’s start off with Celine Dion’s renditions of timeless Christmas classics.

The first song off the track is a haunting version of the classic song O Holy Night. It starts quietly and gently and then gradually builds up to a crescendo of powerful vibrato. I dare say that this is one of the best renditions of the song ever recorded. She also recorded Blue Christmas, a jazzy holiday song that talks about heartbreak. She also recorded versions of Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful), The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire), Brahms’ Lullaby (although it’s not really a Christmas song, is it?), and Feliz Navidad. These songs had been covered a lot of times by a multitude of contemporary singers but with her singing it’s a whole new experience.

The true gems in the album, in my opinion are her originals, which are bound to be classics, too. I’d let my grandchildren listen to them and I bet they’d like them too.

Don’t Save It All For Christmas Day, an original track co-written by the singer herself, is a sad ballad about unrequited or unreturned love. It says that love shouldn’t just be reserved for Christmas day. The next original song is an original holiday song entitled Another Year Has Gone By. It’s a very light pop song that celebrates another year of togetherness. I think we all need more of this. I think it’s more of a New Year song than a Christmas song, though. The Magic of Christmas Day is another powerful original song about Christmas itself. It sends out a very positive message and sums up pretty much everything about this season.

Another soft ballad is These Are Special Times, where the album title was taken from, is a song that’s not just about the holidays, but it speaks of hope and togetherness, a lovely song for friends, family, or other loved-ones. On a different note, a track that you can dance to is Christmas Eve. It’s one of the few upbeat songs in the album and it seems like a great song to play right after the moment you open your Christmas presents.

Who could forget The Prayer, which she sang with with Andrea Bocelli? This song can be sung on different important occasions in your life and not just on Christmas. Still, it’s a very important contribution in the history of holiday songs. All her songs in this album are.

The Joy of Cheap Guitars

Just about every guitar player I know would love to be able to spring for that $5,000 masterpiece hanging in the music store window, then play it like a platinum-selling guitar demi-god.  Unfortunately, most of us live down here in the real world.  We tend to grit our teeth through our first few years of practice to just barely gain a bit of proficiency, and we don’t usually wield the buying power to pick up an amazing piece of musical craftsmanship right off the bat.

Those are both among the reasons that I began my playing career with cheap electric guitars.  I was a twenty-something kid in college, unburdened by illusions of grandeur and with equally unimpressive financial means, so I set off on my journey to become a credible guitar player with a couple of cheap Fender Stratocaster knock-offs that both had a curse-provoking habit of falling out of tune tune every time I so much as breathed on the tremolo.

My cheap guitars didn’t look too sweet either, but that didn’t prevent me from sporting a couple of rocked-out leather guitar straps.  It was sort of like when you see people on the road with ridiculously large, bright, shiny mufflers bolted to the cheapest import car in town. My guitar accessory clearly up-staged the main thing, but that didn’t stop me from chopping away on those guitars until I could finally get them to start sounding sort of like the guitar parts on the records I used to like to listen to.

It took a seriously, painfully long time, after which I declared that I had finally “arrived” as a respectable guitarist, and therefore deserved a more distinguished-looking instrument.  With a steady post-graduate income and a good track record of practicing and gigging behind me, I finally decided that a more expensive guitar was finally a reasonable investment.

I wouldn’t argue that starting out with a cheap guitar is the only way to learn, or even the best, but it helps to figure out if you enjoy playing guitar before you spend an arm and a leg for an expensive instrument.
