Innovation today seems to be common-place. It is almost expected that new products will simply appear to solve some existing problem or make some mundane task simpler. There are those of us that simply use these inventions and those who dream of actually creating them. The desire to create is nothing new and what most people don’t realize is that innovative business ideas are seldom the result of a Eureka moment. Rather there are very distinct steps that define how to invent something. These step include: identify define propose prototype and produce. Some of these steps may occur multiple times during the process.
In the beginning of this process the inventor must identify an area in which innovation is required. This could be as simple as a attempting to use a product and having it not fit your needs. Once this need has been recognized research must be done to see if the problem has already been solved. There is no need to reinvent the wheel.
Once the need has been determined and no solution is readily available specifications must be defined. This means that not only must the need be defined but the requirements and constraints of any solutions must be concretely specified. This gives the inventor guidelines during development and a means of measuring the success of any solution.
The next two steps are repeated as many times as needed to fulfill the need. The inventor proposes and prototypes a product that fulfills the original need meets the requirement and falls within the defined constraints. A prototype is a working model that is tested to determine if the proposed solution meets the design requirements. This process is repeated until a successful solution is achieved.
With a successful prototype in hand the invention can then be produced and introduced into the market for which it was developed. At this point it is up to the consumers to validate whether the inventor has produced a viable product. It is easy to come up with innovative business ideas and following the outline provided on how to invent something won’t ensure success but will provide a much greater chance.
