The Easiest Way To Start Using Cloth Nappies (Cloth Diapers)

People thinking of starting to use cloth nappies (cloth diapers) are often afraid that it is really difficult.  It doesn’t have to be.  The solution: pocket nappies (diapers).  This article will explain why.

What Are Pocket Nappies

In the world of cloth nappies, pocket nappies are a combination of various types.  They are basically a two-part system, which consists of a waterproof cover with a fleece or microfiber lining sewn in.  That lining forms a pocket for the second part–the absorbent layer, which is either cotton or synthetic fleece.  Simply remove the absorbent insert when wet and replace with a fresh one.  When the cover/liner starts to smell, replace that with a fresh one.  These nappies can use Velcro, Snaps or a combination as fasteners.

Pocket Nappies Give A Feeling Of Dryness

The fleece/microfiber lining “wicks” moisture away.  In other words, when your baby pees, the lining actually moves the moisture away from his/her body and into the absorbent layer, which is then protected by the waterproof cover.  Great system.  This makes pocket nappies more similar to disposables than any other cloth system.

Pocket Nappies Fit Well

Most pocket nappies have snaps and/or Velcro placed such that you can adjust the nappy to fit just right.  They are also made to “grow” with your baby.  For example, Fuzzibunz puts out what they call a “One Size” that theoretically will get your baby from birth to potty trained.  Just make sure you take care of your Fuzzibunz inserts with proper laundering.  Often, the inserts get a build-up of laundry detergent, which will cause them to give off a strong odor when combined with pee.  It’s a good idea to run them through a couple loads without any detergent every once in a while.

Easy To Use

Parents who use pocket nappies just rave about how easy they are to use.  Of course, it depends on the brand, but brands like Fuzzibunz and BumGenius have great fastening systems that make it easy to get them on and off of your baby.  They are pretty easy to wash.  Just remember to only line dry the covers.  You should never put any waterproof material in the dryer, or they will likely get ruined after a few times.

Reasonable Price

While pocket nappies are not the least expensive of the 4 main cloth nappy types, they are quite reasonable.  They fall somewhere in the middle of the road, depending on brand.  Prefolds tend to be the least expensive, and All-In-Ones the most.  You can get one Fuzzibunz or BumGenius pocket nappy (includes insert) for about $12-$15.

Great For Night Time

The pocket nappy system is great for nighttime because of the good fit (adjustable) and the waterproof cover.  This means no leaking.  Add a doubler (additional absorbent layer) in the pocket and you have the ultimate night time nappy system.

Conclusion

So, if you’re thinking of using cloth nappies for baby, start with pocket nappies.
